failure to initialise nic (possibly first started after a recent windows update)
On booting into Win7 desktop, the on-board nic fails to initialise. ping to localhost succeeds. ping to 127.0.0.1 succeeds. ping to my LAN IP address fails with "ping: transmit failed. general failure". The LAN adaptor is reading "Enabled" but inside properties IPv4 and IPv6 are shown as "not present" or words to that effect. The win7 troubleshooter completes, but finds no solution. The way I've been fixing it is simple. Disable adaptor; enable adaptor. This causes connectivity to be restored, but must be done after every full-off shutdown. This was not happening at first; something has caused this problem to start recently. There have only been two changes to my system since the error began. A windows update (automatically installed), and I have installed MagicISO. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, Can you try using System Restore and restore back before Windows Update installs the update? It could be a problem with the update, and the update is breaking the OS. Give it a try and let us know! Hope this helps.Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org Contributing Author for: (Sybex) MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-643

If System Restore does not work, follow the steps below to remove the current driver. Then, install the original driver. 1. Click Start. Enter devmgmt.msc in the Start Search box. 2. Expand the branch Network Adapters.3. Double-click on the network adapter, click the Driver tab, click the Uninstall button. 4. Click Start. Enter appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box. 5. If any entry related to the network adapter exists, remove it. 6. Restart.Arthur Xie - MSFT

steps 1,2,3 fixed the problem, but I don't know how the problem arose.

This issue occurs if the audio driver is corrupt, Windows Update tried to install a new one but it is not successful.Arthur Xie - MSFT
