fake copy file window
I just watched over 40,000 files copy to a folder and when it finished the files were not there. I see this all the time. I have a Copying # items (XMB) window that comes up but sometimes files just don't copy.I ran into this problem with my friends vista machine and found that it was only a problem when copying to any directory in the "c:\Program Files" path where it would pretend to place the files there and then move them to somewhere in your user folder instead. Now I use Windows 7 and I get it all the time, no matter where I copy files, these fake copy file windows that pretend like the files are copying.

HiWhat type of files are you copying and to what location are you copying them?Generally, it's not a good idea in Windows 7 to store personal files in any location, except a folder under your user profile or using the Libraries to store the files in a remote location, such as a separate hard drive.Copying files to somewhere such as the Program Files folder can have the effect of slowing down applications that use that location to store their executable files, not to mention the security concerns. The behavior you mentioned where files are relocated to a folder under your own user profile is by design. This is called 'file and folder virtualization' and is designed to protect critical system locations. If you copy files to a location and then you open the folder where you copied the files and they are not present, look on the Command Bar and you will see a Compatibility Files button. Click that button and it will open the folder where the files were stored. Here is what it looks like:The location where the files were stored is usually in the C:\Users\User_name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\your_application folder. You will also see this behavior when an application that is not completely compatible with Windows 7 tries to write information in the Program Files folder without the proper permissions.Hope this helps.Thank You for using Windows 7Ronnie Vernon MVP
