it dident give me an error it just said i need drivers its a western digital (wd3200me) and im running windows xp home with service pack 3. i hope thisWhether it's called an "error" or a "message," it might have helped to know exactly what words appeared when you plugged in the drive. The issue is that WD external drives use drivers that are internal to Windows XP. There is nothing to download or install. Although WD says that one reason that you are asked for a driver when you connect a WD external drive is that the driver may be corrupted, it is unlikely that the disk driver itself is corrupted, given that the external drive uses the same driver as the internal drives. On the other hand, because the external drive is connected to the computer via USB, it also uses a USB driver, and it's possible that there is corruption in that USB driver. The first step is to open Device Manager and check for any error indications:Click Start , click Run , type sysdm.cpl in theOpen box, and then click OK . Click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. If there are no errors indicated in Device Manager, you can remove and reinstall all of the USB controllers as suggestedhere .I would only perform this step, however, if your keyboard connects to the computer with aPS/2 type connector (round) and not aUSB connector . Click on the links for pictures. I just don't recall if the following procedure requires user interaction: if it does, and you have a USB keyboard, you may end up in a Catch-22 position -- unable to install the keyboard without using the keyboard.Assuming that you have a PS/2 keyboard, with Device Manager open, disconnect all usb devices (except mouse) from the computer and then do the following:Expand the entry Universal Serial Bus controllers by clicking the + symbol to its left.Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then clickUninstall to remove them one at a time. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved. If you have a USB keyboard, instead of uninstalling all of the USB controllers, look for an entry under theUniversal Serial Bus controllers node that is called "USB Mass Storage Device." Making sure that all USB devices except your keyboard and mouse are disconnected, right click on USB Mass Storage Device and then click Uninstall. Restart the computer. Then reconnect the external drive.
