I have windows 8.1 with all latest updates, intel I7 4820 quad, 3.7 ghz, 32 gigabytes ddr5 ram.
I recently purchased the latest version of VMware, version 11. Uninstalled version 6 which was working ok, but when I tried to install version 11 I got the error, "have detected a prior version of VMware, click below to uninstall." Doing so produced the error , "uninstall can not proceed, does not have the permissions to access folder" Checking showed the previous version had already been uninstalled, and no files were left in programs 86 folder, or in any other folder. After going through applications folders, local, roaming, etc I then went through the register to delete any entries that might have missed as is usual when uninstalling an application. I ran sfc/scannow several times, retrying to install the new version afterwards. The installer now starts to install and goes almost all the way before stopping with "warning 1909, cannot create shortcut virtual network editor.lnk Verify destination folder exists and that you can access it. Then another pops up warning error 1909 "cannot create shortcut vmwork station.lnk Verify destination folder exists and that you can access it. Then "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. the error code is 2902" I have downloaded the package 4 different times, all with the same error. And also tried different versions of the program with the same problem. This started out with permissions problems, and I have taken steps to cure those, and even contacted the program authors, and was told it is a Microsoft installer problem. Anyone out there ever ran into this one or similar problem and have any suggestions I haven't tried yet? I was referred here from another Microsoft forum, and have another update. I have run "sfc /scannow" quite a few times now. Each time supposedly find a few corrupted files and corrected them. The original errors had to do with permissions, and after much searching, reading, and applying suggested solutions seemed to have taken care of the permission problem. Just reran "sfc" and now I have the permission problem back. I have done everything I can to correct it, but the installer still errors on "not enough permissions to access folders". I have downloaded the package 4 different times to preclude a corrupted download. Applied every suggestion received, and everything short of reinstalling window. I have many programs installed and most are paid applications that make it very difficult to reregister after reinstalling, especially without having to repay for the application when doing so. So reinstalling windows would be a last resort. Any help would be appreciated. I have used "take ownership", changed permissions on almost every folder on my computer that is involved with the windows OS, etc.
