I have a ACER 5535 and the same has happened to me on 2 occasions, it needs the on/off button holding for a few seconds to restart, not good!

woodifer, Windows 7's ACPI functionality isn't perfect as of the RC, and you should expect this to be improved by a later release.-Alex

I was seriously considering removing dual boot, and updating from Vista, but would like some explaination of this behaviour before I take such a drastic step.I could understand if the fault occurred under heavy usage, but it appears completly random, last failure was while using IE8, just simple browsing, shortly after switching on.Have had the puter running all day with multiple windows open without a fault, when I could have understood it occuring. Have run long downloads and back-ups withut a hitch, when I would have assumed processor was at full capacity.Iwould have thought sudden death was afairly important fault to correct.Don

woodifer,Have you installed the latest Intel Matrix Storage Driver? That helps your chipset I believe. Just get the appropriate Windows Vista version.

For a release candidate to freeze randomly is very VERY bad. I thought that it was out of Beta. This serious bug should be corrected and a fix available for download ASAP.I did a clean install of Windows 7, with only drivers downloaded by the installer. The first day everything ran smoothly, but for the last 7+ days, I experience two (2) to five (5)or six (6) freezes a day.I really REALLY want to like Windows 7. When it runs, it runs very smoothly and even faster that the previous OS (Windows XP SP3) on my 6+ year old machine! But again, this should be priority number one to fix. As Microsoft expect feedback from users, they better make sure the users won't get fed up with these freezes and just drop testing Windows 7, and wait for the official release, or even better, wait for SP1...But in typical Microsoft's behavior, it will be ignored. Looks more and more like a repeat of Vista quagmire!!!

Tried Intel matrix storage driver, attempted installation in both Windows 7 & vista HP, got error message:- "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Setup will exit. OK" So not an answer for me, others may like to try !! Don

woodifer,Your original post shows that you dont' have enough drive space free... You need 16GB free for a Windows 7 installation.

if you had followed my posts you will find I had problems creating enough free space, which I resolved, and reinstalled windows 7 in drive F above wich is 21Gb. ( for anyone with similar problem I had to turn off virtual memory & system restore to allow the expansion)In fact I didn't have the freezing problem with the original installation which was in partition just under 16 Gb.

Woodifer,Yes, now that I go to the 'Getting ready for Windows 7' forums and read your posts, I can see that you did have issues. Are the keyboard and mouse both USB or PS2.

Woodifer,I was thinking of other drivers, like the chipset or the synaptics driver for the touchpad.

no, not altered anything, not even re-installed Acer System files.Touchpad works ok for normal functions, but scroll button is not working, not really noticed until just now as I rarely use it, but when keyboard & mouse freeze, touchpad freezes too.

i have some input to your problem , i just ram into this on a desktop pc after installing ie8 , what the problem was is the "Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller" as soon as i opened ie8 and tried to enter a url or text in google search (home page)my kb and mouse frooze and had to hard shutoff the pc, i went to add and remove programs and uninstalled "Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller"added a differnet network card to a pci slot and fixed the problem , i know you have a laptop so adding a another nic card is not as easy or as cheap , but will give you some place to look ie: broadcom website for a patch or acer for an update or add an pcmia nic card . this might help you troubleshoot your problem good luck /mark
