local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration problem, but there's more
I recently did a factory reset of my router at my home, in an effort to solve an internet problem. We have several computers set up here, and the factory reset fixed these for all of our computers except one. The only one with the problem is running windows 7, 64-bit. When this computer attempts to connect (through a wired connection), a balloon tell me I need more information to connect. When I click that, a "Windows Security" window opens asking for an administrator and password. Prior to the factory reset this was not a problem. I have tried system restore which did not change anything. I can connect fine when I directly connect to the modem. The troubleshooter gives me the "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration" message. The computer also connects fine at a friends house through their router. I have tried running cmd and renewing my ip, and I have also tried resetting my DHCP client. I have also tried updating drivers and rolling back drivers. The reason in the title of this post I wrote "but there's more" is because the invalid ip configuration is a common problem, but I cannot find anyone on the internet who is prompted for administrator username and password. I am not sure why I am being asked for this and I have tried many different combinations of usernames and passwords relative to my system/router. Any ideas? If anyone needs more information ask away. I am not an expert but I know my way around a computer generally, so I'll do my best to provide more information if it's needed. I would really, really appreciate the help. Thank you!

Hi Most Routers need an ID and PW to connect to their menus. Does this occurs with other computer to. Does the computer gets an IP when connected with a wire to the Router? Can you run ipconfig/all and copy paste here the results. In general. Follow this process to make sure that the network aspects of the computer are On and configured Correctly. Check the Device Manager for valid Wire card entry. http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_dm.jpg If there is No valid entry, delete any Bogus Entry, and re-install the Wire card's Drivers. Check the Network connections to make sure that you have a Local Area Connection Icon/Entry, and that the Properties of the Icon (right click on the Icon) are correctly configured with TCP/IPv4 protocol in the Network Connections Properties. http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_connection_tcp.jpg Log to the Router's menu from a working computer and make sure that the DHCP is On and it is configured to assign IPs that can cover the number of computer that are connected (few more will be even better). Switch Off the computer and the Router, Reboot the Router, and the computer. Right click on the Wire card Network Connection, choose Status, Details, and see if it got an IP and the rest of the settings. Still Not Working, try this too. Software Firewalls. Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall Windows Firewall has to be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions General example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trusted Please Note that some 3rd party Software Firewalls keep blocking aspects of Local Traffic even it they are turned Off (disabled). If possible configure the Firewall correctly, ortotally uninstall it to allow clean flow of local network traffic. If the 3rd party software is uninstalled or disables, make sure that Windows native Firewall is On . Reset the Network Stacks . Type Cmd in the Start Search text box. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run a Command Prompt as an Administrator. Allow elevation. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt , and then press the Enter key. Do the same process for refreshing the TCP/IP, just replace the typed command with. netsh int ip reset Restart the computer. Jack, MVP-Networking. EZLAN.NET

I am not sure if this is important, but I feel I should mention that while performing the above checks, the network adapter says "authentication failed" (because I did not enter a username and password). I do have a valid wire card entry, and I confirmed that my properties of the network adapter match those form the screenshot. I can also confirm that DHCP is enabled on the router and it can cover all the connected computers. I have no firewalls installed on my computer except for windows firewall and windows defender, and I tried temporarily disabling those to no avail. I have also rebooted the computer and the router to seemingly no change. When I right click on the wire card network connection and then status, details, it says that DHCP is enabled and there is an address under the Ip4 connection. OP again, I ended up going to device manager, clicking my wire card and uninstalling, then reinstalling. I am no longer asked for a password, but I still can't seem to connect. Today when I rebooted, I had internet for about 30 seconds, then it stopped working and the network card said authentications failed. I haven't been able to repeat that. Any ideas?

One last thing, is it possible my router is not compatible with windows 7? It is a d-link DIR-615, and I can't seem to find whether or not it is.

It does not appear to support win 7. You can try to disable IP6 on the NIC and use a static IP address (the IP list above is auto windows IP not an IP from your router)

Hi, According to the Windows 7 compatibility center, it is compatible with Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Search.aspx?l=en-us&type=Hardware&s=DIR-615&os=32-bit This issue may occur if some service or driver on the computer affects the networking connection. Please check if solutions on the following threads will help: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/43ea076e-5210-4194-80d8-cb4681e852a0 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/2c0af923-24bb-4de2-95a7-9a9d4f64a8b0 In addition, I suggest updating BIOS and network driver to latest version. Hi I've tried at least 20 things to bring my pc back online but all have failed. My DHCP is not enabled but I can't figure out how to enable that. How do you dial into the router on another computer? I'm considering submitting a proposal to the Defense Dept. to buy Dell computers loaded with Microsoft software and give it to the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. jf
