lost the internet after last windows update windows 7
Last night I loaded 6 windows 7 update for 64-bit Home version . Update were kb2656368,kb2656373,kb915597,kb2679255,kb890830,kb2653956. I have the internet during the install, but when I restarted I could not connect. Sometimes it asked to check broadband connection, other time it just says no connectivity. This happened 2 weeks ago also, I was on the phone with Dell for 9 hours and last resort was to reinstall operating system. I did a restore back to January and it finally worked, (did not have to do the reinstall of the os). I have McAfee virus and all seems fine. Now it did the same thing again. I tried restore but this time it did not work. Dell has no other answers and I really don't want to reinstall eveything. I can connect with a laptop and an ipad to the same modem, router with no problems. ISP provider says all is fine on their end. If anybody can help I would truely appreciate it.

if you go to CMD prompt and run ipconfig /all that will tell you your ip address If you see 169.254... then your computer is not getting the ip addresses from the router (powercycle the router) If you see 192.168... then your computer is getting the ip and the internet should work. (ping google.com from cmd) Maybe post the results of "ipconfig /all" here so we can see what possibly could be the problem. Checking event viewer system log won't hurt either.

Dell did the IPconfig and it is 192.168.... and we do get pings back from google and yahoo. Internet works in safe mode. It keeps trying to connect in normal mode, but then the internet lite turns red and all the lites go out on the moduem. The it all start again. When I did restore it wiped out all Jan and Feb restore points and have only left me April. I did do a system image on Sunday. But it did not have my Mcafee on the computer then. Wonder if I restored with that if it would work, then just reinstall the Mcafee I'll post the ip from safe mode when I get home tonight.

when you go to the safe mode run the "ipconfig /all" capture the information. (ip, sm, dg, dns) Then based on the information captured, set the IP and DNS to be static instead of autoconfigure.

I did as you said, it would not connect with the static. I put it back to autoconfigure and guess what , it connects now. Downloaded the windows updates again and installed, rebooted, crossed my fingers and it came back up fine with the internet. Have no idea what is going on with it fixiing itself but I'll take it. All seems to be working fine. Thanks for the help, my next step would have been your next post.
