map Network Drive on XP computer fails since upgrading to 8.1

I have been able to use my XP computer to map drives and folder on my Win 8 tablet for years.

Today I "upgraded....yeah, right" to 8.1.  Now I cannot map anything on the 8.1 computer.

The 8.1 computer is in Mshome workgroup.  I didn't do that.  It must have carried over from the 8.0 installation.

Browse can find the 8.1 computer. Clicking it shows "folders" like, C, Documents, Examples, Users, Users/Printers and Faxes.

Why did this Upgrade do this and waste hours of my time?

On the 8.1 computer, I went to This PC, Documents.  That shows the files and folders that used to be in MyDocuments on the 8.0 version.

I right click Documents and Share with "Homegroup Read/Write".

Why did this Upgrade do this and waste hours of my time?

Can someone please help?

Thanks In Advance

Hi Pete,

It's confuse bout your description. Did you create HomeGroup and make them joined in?

If your network contains computers running different versions of Windows, put all computers in the same workgroup instead of HomeGroup.

For the detailed information, please refer to this article:

Networking home computers running different versions of Windows

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/networking-home-computers-running-different-windows#networking-home-computers-running-different-windows=windows-7

After that, you could access the file that other computer shared under Windows Explorer.

If you still want to map the network, please let us know what error message or symptom did you encounter when you attempt to map the drive?

You may try to manually use  UNC (\\server\share) and IP (\\ip.add.res.s\share) to map the drive for a test.

You may also try the following suggestions to check the issue:

1. Try giving full permissions to the folder and then try accessing it.

2. Temporary disable Windows Firewall service

3. Check network setting and make sure it is set to enable network discovery.

If the issue persists, please proceed to the next steps to verify service on both of them.

Verify Network settings

=========================

a. Click start and click Control Panel.
b. Double click Network and Sharing Center.
c. Select "Change advanced sharing settings" option in the right panel.
d. Please turn on "Network discovery" and "File and printer sharing".
