I suggest that on the desktop computer, you click Start->Control Panel->Network and Sharing Center->Change advanced sharing settings. Please change the setting of Password protected sharing. If the issue persists, please let us know if it occurs whenever you create a mapped drive or access shared folders, or it only occurs when you setup mapped drive from the laptop.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I'm not interested in the problem anymore. I switched to Ubuntu ;)

I did theStart->Control Panel->Network and Sharing Center->Change advanced sharing settings and changing Password protected sharing to "off" but the laptop (also on WORKGROUP) can only get read access. It cannot write files. In a previous install of Windows 7 (only about 1 week ago), all I did was fire up Windows and all sharing worked. I didn't even have to turn on Sharing of that drive. This time, it's not working out of the box,I had to turn on Sharing explicitly, and I had to monkey with special permissions to even get to see files. Even though EVERYONE has Full Control, nobody can write files yet. What is THE root cause of a network share not being recognized from another computer, or of having to fiddle with permissions to allow read/write? Why would it have worked the first time I installed Windows 7and not the second time?
