I'm trying to install Lync Server 2010 trial version on Windows Web Server 2008 R2. The deployment wizard shows the following error for Step 1: Prepare Schema under Deploy > Active Directory Preparation

Not Available: Schema preparation requires Active Directory administrative tools to be installed. These tools are installed as a Windows feature under Remote Server Administration Tools in the Windows add feature wizard.

However, I don't see any Active Directory related items under Remote Server Administration Tools in the Windows add feature wizard. What am I missing here? Thanks.

Windows Web Server is not supported for Lync. See the system requirements page which states literally:

Lync Server 2010 is not supported on the following operating systems: "The Windows Web Server°2008 R2 operating system or the Windows Web Server°2008 operating system"

These are the steps you should take on a supported server:

1. Just open Server Manager on that server
2. On the right hand side, click on features
3. Click on Add Features
4. Scroll to "Remote Server Administration Tools" and open the folder
5. Open the folder "Role Administration Tools"
6. Open the folder "AD DS and AD LDS Tools"
7. Open the folder "AD DS Tools"
8. Select the checkbox in front of "AD DS Snap-Ins and Command-Line Tools"
9. Select Next and go on with the installation of the tools

The Windows Web Server 2008 R2 operating system or the Windows Web Server 2008 operating system is not support Lync Server 2010.

Please change to other support OS to deploy Lync Server.

Had the same issue but was able to solve it by installing Administrative tools.

I know this reply is after log time.

I do agree with Jidan and Ruben that LYNC is not supported on Web Server (2008&2008R2)

installing this in 2012 can be pretty frustrating. just install everything under windows deployment services tools
