everything works -it's just slow. I re-installed McFee virus protection. Does virus protection slow down the computer?yes some VP can slow down computers. try exiting your VP and see if it is any quicker in use. if it is that is the problem, if not it will be a installed program, perhaps IE8 conflicting with one, or a newly installed program.

McAfee will tend to slow things down - possibly more than other Anti-virusesALL slow the PC down to some extent.Sure, you could easily be having problems with McAfee - but if the problem snuck up on you, it's likely to be something other than that.DO NOT try to run without AV installed.! DO NOT disable your AV! First let's see what's reasonable for your PCHow much RAM is installed?Have you properly set the size of the Temporary Internet Files Folder (should be less than 50MB) I know some people who have huge TIFFs, because they never changed the default - with the result that the computer spent more time reading the TIFF than anything else (data from the TIFF is loaded every time an instance of IE opens). Answer the first question, and correct any problem in the second, and test before responding, then we may see some wood in the trees. -- Noel PatonCrashFixPC Nil Carborundum Illegitemiwww.crashfixpc.co.uk Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC

An anti-virus program is a program that is continually running. Assuch, all of them slow down the computer to some extent. But thebetter ones slow it down so little that its effect can hardly benoticed. 2. McAfee, in my view, and that of lots of others of us here, is amongthe two worst of the available anti-virus programs (the other isNorton). I recommend eSET NOD32, if you are willing to pay for it, orone of the following three if you want a freeware one: Avast, Avira,or Microsoft Security Essentials. 3. There are many possibilities for why your computer is slow. The twomost likely are as follows: a. Malware infection. Besides the McAfee anti-virus, do you run anyanti-spyware software? I recommend that you download, install and runboth MalwareBytes AntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware. b. The programs that you have automatically starting when you boot andrunning in the background. You should be concerned with *all* programsthat start automatically, not just with those that go into the systemtray. Not all auto-starting programs manifest themselves by an icon inthe tray. On each program you don't want to start automatically, check itsOptions to see if it has the choice not to start (make sure youactually choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon"option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn'twork, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically. However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose ofrunning the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tellyou, you should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programsyou run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, butothers have no effect on performance. Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should dois determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and whatthe cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can tryinternet searches and ask about specifics here. Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informeddecision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. -- Ken BlakePlease Reply to the Newsgroup Ken Blake

Have you considered changing your anti0virus software? I would suggest Avast. Great low resource suite. As for your internet explorer speeds. I STRONGLY recommend you swap to Google's own Chrome. Such a greatprogram boasting unmatched speeds. Now supporting add-ons just like Fierfox and IE.-dR
