network problems with lanman workstation starting
I had Window vista, but the network services were not working properly.
I was trying to mount a network drive to back the system up. I could not. The back up software had a discovery utility. It would indicate an error saying "Workstation" not running.
So they I ran "services" and the Workstation service was not running. When I tried to start it I would get varrious errors. I tried various things, without any luck. I do not have the windows windows disk for the windows that came with the computer.
I decided it would be easier to upgrade the OS. I updated the OS to Windows 7.
Now the symptoms are amost identical, except the Workstation service is listed a perptually "starting" I cannot stop it/restart it. The top level symptom is that I am unable mount or interface with any Windows system/disk. Yet diagnosing the
network shows no problems, and internet access works fine.
Any thought/suggestions?

Hi,
Currently, I suggest you could try to use SFC tool to check if it repair this issue:
How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on
Windows 7
If this issue persists, try the following steps to check the result:
Note: please
back up the registry before this operation.
1. Copy the wkssvc.dll file on another Windows 7 machine which Workstation service can be started. Then, please replace the wkssvc.dll file under C:\Windows\System32
folder and take ownership of the file.
2. Please repeat above steps to export the following registry key on a good machine. Then, please copy and import it on the problematic machine.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanWorkstation
Hope it helps.
