Encryption using XP's native EFS system cannot happen all by itself. Either your friend encrypted the original files or the computer is infected with ransomware. If the former, then your friend knew he encrypted the original files and if he didn't back up the encryption certificates the data is almost certainly inaccessible forever. He can contact Elcomsoft to see if their software will help, but there is no backdoor to EFS encryption. If the latter, then your friend would have gotten a message from the malware demanding he pay ransom to get the files unencrypted.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457116.aspx -Using Encrypting File System (MS) http://www.elcomsoft.com/aefsdr.html -Encrypted files retrieval application And for future disaster planning:http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Backing_UpMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
