path name too long
Dear all, We are trying to copy files from and old PC with Windows Vista via external HDD, and to transfer these files to a new PC with Windows 7. Unfortunately we get the error "path name too long". I have tried to use robocopy, which transfers the files, with no errors, but the issue is that you can not open the transferred file anymore.Same happens with Acronis. Is there any resolution to this problem, because the ammount of data that have long path names is more than 600 files, which makes it difficult to reduce the name of each file. Thank you

If the files are located deep within subfolders move them to a different folder (if needed using robocopy again). Example: C:\folder1\folder2\folder3\folder4\folder5\folder6\file Move to allow a longer name: C:\folder1\folder2\file What is the maximum length of a file name? Windows usually limits file names to 260 characters. But the file name must actually be shorter than that, since the complete path (such as C:\Program Files\filename.txt) is included in this character count. This is why you might occasionally encounter an error when copying a file with a very long file name to a location that has a longer path than its current location. You could also try a bulk file rename program to shorten the name.
