problems sharing computers
I have a desktop hardwired to my Fios router and a laptop connected wirelessly to this network. I've tried to connect the 2 thru network sharing and homegroups, changed passwords to match, left homegroups and restarted process but can never get the job done. I've shut firewalls off, but never can I connect so I can at least share my printer. Instructions say to click on homegroups then click on join but this option is never present. It's as if each computer is creating it's own homegroup and never the twain shall meet. I have no problems in Vista at all so I'm getting quite dissapointed with this seemingly simple task. Any help out there?

If I understand you correctly, youre trying to use HomeGroup. However, to use the HomeGroup feature youll need to have at least two computers running Windows 7. Try going to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center > Change Advanced Sharing Settings. In the Home or Work profile, make sure you have Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing and Public Folder Sharing and Password Protected Sharing all set to On.

Try powering down your router, wait 10 seconds or so and then power it up again. I had the same problem you are having and that is what solved the issue for me. Hope this helps.Ray

guys I've tried all your suggestions.I'm at the point there is definately a problem with the network and sharing aspect of this OS and the homegroup app. Vista was a no brainer. I can build my own systems o/c the ____ out of them and I can't get 2 computers to talk to each other?? This is definately a no sell for me. Why is there no option for me to choose to join my homegroup. I see what's happening. Each pc is creating it's own homegroup. The only diffenece between the laptop is 32 bit and desktop is 64 bit but that should not make a difference. On each machine they all show up on the network map, just can't open from either end. I'm really getting disgusted! I'm also angry there is no feedback option in RC. I'd love to let MS no of this trouble.

I had the same problem. Each tried to create its own home group. I finally created the homegroup on my desktop and then went about finding out why my laptop could not sommunicate with the desktop. Do you have a printer on your network? I have mine connected to one of the ethernet ports on my router. From my laptop I tried to access the web based administration page of this printer. I could do this under Vista but could not under Win 7. That is what led me to finally realize the problem was with my router. After I powered it down and then up everything was ok. Like you I tried everything I could think of, to no avail. I was so frustrated I had to just leave it alone for a week. So don't give up yet. Someone may yet point you in the right direction. Good luck!Ray

For some reason your machines don't see each other. Can they see each other in your network and sharing center?
