rebuilding offline file cache created via group policy
I had a client that was trying to synch files that the user did not have access to for some reason. This caused "access denied" errors during synch. I tried to remove the folders from synch center, but couldn't so I used the following procedure to rebuilt the offline cache: 1. Open up registry editor 2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc 3. Add a new key (folder) called Parameters 4. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc\Parameters, add a new DWORD called FormatDatabase and set its value to 1 After I did this I rebooted the machine and logged back in. If I try to right-click the synch icon in the notification area and select "synch now" it will change to "synch pending" as a status. It never seems to actually do a synch even after reboots. I assume I then need to recreate those offline files again since I then didn't see anything to synch is the synch center. That's when I did a went to a command prompt and did a gpupdate /force. I figured group policy would recreate what was originally set up. I then rebooted again, but it didn't seem to help. What am I missing here?

To be clear this is folder redirection via group policy for Documents and Desktop.

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. When the computer is restarting, the shell will re-initialize the CSC cache, and then delete the registry key if the registry entry exists. So please check the key whether still exist in the registry. I suggest to remove the key first if it still exist. Meantime, I need to advise that the Group Policy already is already deployed to the client, the version number of the policy have not changed, so that the gpupdate /force commend can not let the policy re-apply. How core Group Policy works http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784268(WS.10).aspx Please Clear the cache from Control Panel=>Sync Center=>hit Manage Offline files=>Click Disk Usage tab=>Delete temporary files. Then please disable Offline files on all the network folder, then re-enable it for a test. Also, you may disable the Offline Files function, then reboot the computer=> delete the files under the CSC folder=> re-enable the Offline Files function. Been real busy and didn't really understand everything you said. " I need to advise that the Group Policy already is already deployed to the client, the version number of the policy have not changed, so that the gpupdate /force commend can not let the policy re-apply. " I thought the whole point of gpupdate /force was to force group policy to apply even if changes haven't been made. Here's the exact info on the command: " Reapplies all policy settings. By default, only policy settings that have changed are applied. " Can you better explain your above comment?

Hi, Because this command is used for forcing to apply all the settings. But in this case, the setting have not been changed. So if you run this command, it does not affect the setting. The Offline files function is still enabled. I mean the command can not let the setting is changed. Have you tried the steps I mentioned? Best Regards Juke Chou TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. "Please Clear the cache from Control Panel=>Sync Center=>hit Manage Offline files=>Click Disk Usage tab=>Delete temporary files" I believe I did this part during my troubleshooting. My thought process was to remove folders from the synch center completely and set them up again. I ended up going to the folders on the server and selected "make available offline". I wanted to get the computer back to the user and that seemed to accomplish what I wanted, but I wasn't sure it was the best way to do it. I created this thread to get some more information for next time. I appreciate the information you have provided.

Hi, As you said, you may completely delete the cache, then set them up again. Based on my experience, this is the best way to do it. Have this issue been resolved? Or after doing those steps, the issue have not happened again? If so, Can I mark my reply as "Answered". this can share this information to the other members who have the same issue and let them learn from your interaction with us.
