run as admin
Applications will not run unless I select "run as administrator" It asks me to select an application to open the program. I can not run the exe file to install SP1 or other exe files. This includes items in Control Panel too. At this point the pc "seems" to be free of malware.

Friedermann, something really seems off based on your statement, In addition to it sounding like you do not have Admin privliges, it appears on the surface that your user account has been changed privlige wise. I have seen malware induce this type of behaivor on systems. Or someone has enabled parental controls and locked the system down tight.

The user is an admin and there are no parental controls set. There was a lot of malware removed. created a new standard user and it seems to work normally.

Friedemann, just to be on the extra paranoid side, if a lot of malware was removed, I would advise your to backup your files to a safe location, then perform a fresh install (format the drive). At that point make sure any passwords you used to log on, are changed up. Better to be safe than sorry with a compromised system.

I don't think you're being paranoid at all. If there truly was a lot of malware, it's always best to do a clean reinstallation of Windows rather than just remove the malware. The problem with multiple infections is that there may be interactions between them that the removal software doesn't see and doesn't remove. So even though the malware itself may be gone, some of those interactions may still be there and may cause all sorts of problems. Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP
