some part of windows vista networking is stopping any IM applications to connect
Hi guys, i'm having a weird variant of the "local only" problem or at least looks like it, i dont get the local only problem i get the small world orb there but i cant connect any IM application at all being it Live Messenger Yahoo Messenger or AIM, and all of this happen after either long periods of inactivity or after suspend or hybernation (i experience this in my 2 computers a Desktop with windows vista 64 SP1 and my laptop with windows vista 64 sp1) at first i thought it was the router, but i have 3, one is cisco, another linksys and a 3rd one it's a linux box running smoothwall, in ANY case it doesnt work with either. NOW THE VARIANT: i DO have http connectivity, while i cant connect the messengers in any of the boxes, after the conditions i expressed, so while i spend time trying to connect the messengers i can happily browse on IE7 , IE8 and firefox, so this is how it differs from the local only problem, i tried to do some captures under linux and when the IM applications try to connect the linux box doesnt detect any kind of TCP transaction at all, as if the connections being tried to made were stopped in the vista boxes. CURRENT SOLUTION: the only current solution is to restart Windows then it all works perfectly. As i say i doubt it has to do with type of connectivity (wireless or wired) or that it got to do with antivirus (tried with different ones) or by restoring the system (tried that already) i thought it might have to do with NLA but the fact that i can check webpages but not connect the IM apps proves that it might not be the case. ALSO important: the IM apps work perfectly and always connect, it's just after idle time or suspend that they wont. Any suggestions? (btw all works perfect if i use windows XP on both computers so it's vista)

Hi, Thank you for your post. Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Scan your system to make sure that the system is virus free. Temporarily disable or remove your security software (such as antivirus software, firewall, etc.) to see if this problem is gone. 2. Please completely remove the driver of the NIC from both Device Manager and Control Panel Programs and Features, reboot the computer and reinstall the driver again. If there is a new version of driver released, please also try it. 3. Please perform a Clean Boot to check if there are any conflicts. Clean boot ================= 1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please check if the issue reoccurs at this time. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. 4. Check the connection status of the IMs. 1) At the elevated command prompt, type Netstat no 2) Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then click Task Manager. 3) On the Processes tab, note the process identification number (PID) for the processes of the IMs. 4) Go back to the results of the Netstat no command, check the items according the PID of the IMs. How are the statuses of the connections? You can also copy the results to this post and also let us know the PID of the IMs, and we will perform some further research. Meanwhile, are there any error messages appear when the IMs failed to logon? If so, please also let us know. I know that Windows Live Messenger has a Connection Troubleshooter, you can also use it to diagnose the connection issues. Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

arang2008, did you solve this?I have seen the exact same problems on a couple of computers running Windows Vista. After a suspend/hybernation the computer and network works just fine. And if you press "Serverstatus" in Live Messenger it says that all systems are up and running. But Messenger cannot connect. After a reboot it works./Nicklas
