How can I not have windows xp NOT startup certain programs when the computer is started.Programs (and other things) are started from numerous places. Do you have something specific in mind? The first place to look is in the options of the programs themselves to see if there is a setting that prevents it from starting "when Windows starts" or "when logged on" or the like.Next, look in Start > All Programs > Startup to see what shortcuts are there. Delete any shortcuts for apps that you don't want to automatically start. You can always start such apps manually when needed. If you want to TEMPORARILY disable something from starting automatically, use the System Configuration Utility (Start > Run > msconfig > OK). When the System Configuration Utility opens, click the Startup tab. Uncheck items you don't want to start on the next boot. Although you can suppress the message reminding you that you are in a diagnostic configuration, if you want to remove a startup item permanently, a third-party utility is better to use than msconfig. When you are done diagnosing the problem, re-run misconfig and enable all of the items.Autoruns is a very powerful utility. You can get in trouble by using Autoruns without knowing what you're doing, so I suggest confining your experimentation to the Autoruns "Logon" tab. If you uncheck an item, it won't start on the next boot (without the reminder message from msconfig). If you change your mind, just run Autoruns again and recheck the box. If you really want to never see the application at startup again, use Autoruns to delete its entry.

Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn'twork, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically. However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose ofrunning the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tellyou, you should be concerned, not with how many of these programsyou run, but which. Some of them can hurt performance severely, butothers have no effect on performance.Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should dois determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and whatthe cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can tryinternet searches and ask about specifics here.Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informeddecision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.Ken Blake (MS MVP)
