I will do this and report back, thanks I tried and this is what I get, please advise The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue. <complianceissuepri1 xmlns="">Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade. </complianceissuepri1> <complianceissuepri1 xmlns="">An error prevented a required compliance check from completing. Cancel the installation and try upgrading again. </complianceissuepri1> Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing. Point 1. I have SP1 installed.

Hi, Is the system restore failing for all restore points or specific one? As the safe mode option is not available to you, you can try restoring the system from windows recovery environment. To boot into recovery environment, you need to create system repair disc: Launch Backup & Restore Control Panel, on the left pane, click 'Create a system repair Disc'. Using this disc, you can boot into Windows Recovery Environment, select system restore. Thanks, Girish -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please remember to click "Vote As Helpful" on the post if the information is useful to you ! Hi I have tried DEL key to access BIOS (which is what it should be) but it doesn't work. None of the F keys work to get into the boot mode either as I've tried them. When I press the DEL or F key the pc just boots up normally. Also if I could get into BIOS what do you mean by alter the boot order. Thanks

The Boot Order is the order in which the system tests devices to see whether they contain code that will start an operating system - the default in most machines is the hard drive, although many start with the CD/DVD drive and then check the HD. My keyboard is just USB but I've tried my original keyboard and I can get into BIOS and the advanced boot menu, The BIOS boots first with HD. Now I can get into advanced boot menu should I choose repair computer or go into safe mode and see if system restore works. Thanks

I'd try a System Restore from the 'Repair Your Computer' option - it may work better than the one from Safe Mode. If that fails then you have other options.Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Please run CHKDSK and SFC scans - type in the Search box CMD.EXE right-click on the only file that is found Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up At the Command prompt, type CHKDSK C: /R and hit the Enter key You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient! After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC SFC -System File Checker - Instructions Click on the Start button type in the Search box CMD.EXE right-click on the only file that is found Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up At the Command prompt, type SFC /SCANNOW and hit the Enter key Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot. Once complete, create a System Restore point. Reboot Create another System Restore point Reboot again Now try using System Restore to go back to the first of the new Restore Points. (I was getting my threads a little confused there - but...) Yes - a repair install if you have the proper disk for it (or can download it) You can download legal copies of your OS with SP1 embedded (whch is one of the things that stopped your eartlier attempt) from the links here - http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft This will hopefully allow you to do the repair install. Will I be able to use my original product key with this download and do I just burn the ISO file to a DVD. Is this a genuine product, I'm a bit war of using it. I've downloaded a copy but not done anything with it yet. A repair install will keep my files, applications etc? The file I downloaded X17-24208 is a zip file but when I opened it there was a txt doc: This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification. What is that?? and an image file, no ISO file. I burned IMG file to a disc as I thought it was an image of the OS but there was nothing on the disc when I opened it.
April 19th, 2012 2:37am

You must use the Key form the COA sticker on your machine - make sure that you can read it before you start! You may not be allowed to enter it during the install, if so, Skip that step, and the system wil automatically input the default key. Once the repair is complete, you can change the Key to the one on the sticker, and activate.Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Is the COA the same as the product key? I tried to upgrade with the downloaded file but got this message An error prevented a required compliance check from completing. Cancel and try upgrading again
April 19th, 2012 4:59am

The COA sticker is the one sutck on the outside case of your machine - or possibly inside the battery compartment. On it, you will find the edition and version of Windows you are using, and the Product Key. As far as I'm aware, there are no IMG or ZIP files linked on that site - what exact file did you download? an ISO file is an image of the disk, and you burn it using either an application or the WIndows Disk Image Burner. If you extracted the file using comething like WInRAR, then that was the wrong thing to do. To help everyone, it may be useful to post an MGADiag report - then I can direct you to the proper file to download, and make sure that you process it properly. (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 ) Once saved, run the tool. Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report. To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response. Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker! Here's an example of the COA sticker - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Hardware.aspx Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

If SAS is running in the background it could be causing the problem (it's more likely than MSE, actually!) disable it as well (I don't think you need to uninstall it, but it may be a good idea).Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Is there anything else I could do without clean install. Can't the corrupted files be deleted, I don't even know what or where they are?
April 20th, 2012 10:34am

The system would still complain - it has a record of every file that should be present, and its identity, and if it's not present it will attempt to place it back where it should be, using the inbuilt backups. In your case the backups are also affected, so the system is complaining about them too. It is possible to replace the backups from a genuine installation - but it's also a complex task, which I don't feel competent to address in a forum. If you want to attempt it, I recommend that you start a new thread, and include the link to your CBS.log file and ask for assistance.
