there's something stopping microsoft security essentials working after malware has been removed
Hi, this is my 1st time asking so hope I'm in the right place, if not sorry! Yesterday I down loaded a file and scanned it with microsoft security essentals, I was all green to go but after opening the file I suddenly got malware alert. mse removed some but then sent 3 files off to be analysed? After which I was getting all sorts of pop ups even when idle so updated mse and tried to run a scan, but the scan window disappeared and I haven't been able to open mse since! I rebooted into safe mode and was able to right click a file and scan that to get the mse window up and was able to scan. It found some dangerous files and cleaned my computer. After booting back up into 'normal mode' the pop ups had gone and the processes in task manager linked to the malware had gone, I wish I had written down what they were but from what I remember they were hmr.exe, hmi.exe, and hig..something.exe... I downloaded a program from the mse site to do a manual scan and it came back clean so I'm fairly sure the malware is now gone, but I'm still unable to get mse back up! I don't know where it is on my hdd to manually start it, when I right click a file to scan there's a slight pause with an error message saying 'Security Essentials was unable to scan the selected file(s).', though sometimes the window pops up for a second along with the task bar icon then quickly disappears. Any ideas? A simple fix i hope! Tanks in advance, Oakey

Tanks in advance, Oakey (wrong forum - but hopefully Doug can move it to a more appropriate one) Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free - www.malwarebytes.org ) - update it and run a full system scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts. Delete everything it finds. Please do NOT activate the real-time scanning ability in MBAM - it does have a few bugs that can trip you up if you don't know how to get around them. -- Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth
