What antivirus/security program do you already have installed? It sounds like you have Microsoft Live OneCare of Microsoft Security Essentials. Both of those will not permit you to install Windows Defender since they already have antispyware components.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I have the same problem. I also have MSE installed. Which one, in your opinion is better. I have an old HP Brio with Celeron 700. It works and it's paid for. Since I connected it to a DSL modem, it has done nothing but upload and download data. I have tried other apps and did Cntl/Alt/Del and checked applications and processes, but so far can't tell what is doing it.MSE didn't show anything, either, so I tried to install Defender and got the same message he did. It came up green.

Hi old fart 64,Still, Microsoft Security Essentials is better option. It's being updated twice a day so you are assured of a high-success rate that newly-programmed and newly-discovered malware infections will be detected. If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Propose as Answer" If you find it helpful , mark it as helpful by clicking on "Vote as Helpful" button at the top of this message. Make sure your computer is clean by going through the steps at the link below. Don't skip the preparatory work. You need to have an antivirus installed and Windows Defender is not an antivirus. Microsoft Security Essentials is a good choice for you but it alone is not enough to determine what is happening with your computer. After you have gone through the scanning steps, if you need more help please post back with the results.http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_MalwareMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
