In your case, you need a full install version. To use an upgrade version you must have a qualifying OS already installed.

Yes, I agree with OldHobo. When purchasing Windows 7, you can choose either an upgrade version or full version. Both upgrade and full versions include the same features. Upgrade versions require that Windows XP or Windows Vista are installed on your computer before installing Windows 7. Full versions don't require a previous version of Windows to be installed on your computer. Since your machine is without any previous Windows system installed, a full version is the correct one for you. Go to Windows 7's website and you will find more. You can find an inernet shortcut that descibes how to install Upgrade as Full, which says Boot (F8 on start up depending on your PC) Install first pass New without providing key; reinstall within installed Windows OS as upgrade providing key. It is a hole left open for people likely in your position. If you are concerned about losing contacts, favorites, music, pictures, back them up to DVD or externalfor post install restore. Having paid for "Full" Windows 7 Home Premium on a computer that needs Pro Or Ultimate, to be able to make use of 2 processers/8 cores because the Microsoft Windows 7 comparitave description did not say that I would be buying an incompatible OS I believe it is only fair that everyone be aware of what is possible in the installation of their purchased OS. I shall have to buy upgrade to get the right OS in here and am not happy with the hit to my wallet.
