why remove win 2000 compatibility?

in compatibility tab. there is less choices then in windows 7.

One of those choices is windows 2000 compatibility.

I have an app that runs without problems only on windows 2000 compatibility.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP share a common architecture. Whatever runs in Windows 2000 runs in Windows XP as well without the need for any support installation. Therefore, probably, Windows 2000 must've been removed. It's not a statement from Microsoft, but this is what I believe.

  

If your application works fine in Windows 2000, it most likely will work with Windows XP also. Therefore, try in Windows XP compatibility

Win2k is out of support for 3 years, so MS no longer offers compatibility shims for this operating system.

as you noticed 2000/XP are nearly the same. But Win9x have a different architecture so it makes sense to keep them.
