win7 (64) Acer laptop, internet connection issues
I am having connection issues, my home network consists of DSL > Router > wifi Router. On my laptop, I have network and internet connectivity using wireless, when I plug in directly I get network connectivity, but no internet access. I can ping sites, and resolve ips but IE, and FF will not connect to websites, even when I use the IP address instead of domain names. The funny thing is that Network & sharing center reports that there is internet access (it lies, except utorrent seems to have no trouble downloading). I have experimented with static IP, and DNS info, but it doesn't help. Also have used Netsh to reset Ip,dns etc also no help. restored from a few days ago, no help. Ipconfig release, and renew = no help. Troubleshooters don't find any problems. Turning off wireless doesn't do a darn thing either. the other 3 computers connected to the wired portion of the network have no problems. why must I be confined to the basement when I want to browse the web on my laptop? I have read many many many many many posts regarding connection issues with win 7 (most of them related to wifi connection issues, my problem seems to be the reverse of what others mostly experience) haven't found a solution yet please help! P.S. I recall over the course of using XP for a few years, having to reinstall the tcp ip stack a few times, does it seem like a reasonable course in this instance?

I'm really not feeling any love here. :( Update: updated NIC drivers, still no internet access. Changed to static IP, DNS, Gateway, still no internet access. (DHCP settings were always correct in both sides of the network), Im not running firewall/AV software except, windows firewall and microsoft security essentials. Disabled firewall, that didn't help either. I've rebooted the computer, reset the router, disconnected the wifi router, none of this has solved the problem. I have even tried the most technically advanced troubleshooting technique I know of... cursing, and spitting coffee. (that did make me feel better, but still no internet access) WHAT AM I MISSING?

Hi, First of all, please let me know if you used the Wireless or Ethernet to connect to the Router. I suspect the issue is caused by Local Area Network Settings. You may refer the following steps to check it. 1. Open the IE. 2. Hit Tools under the tool bar. 3. Then click Internet Options. 4. Hit Connection on the tab, then navigate to LAN Settings and click it. 5. Do not use the Proxy server, and check the box before Automatically detect settings. In addition, I suggest to check whether the router have Firewall and block any website. Hope this helps, thank you. Hi Juke, Thanks for getting back to me. Proxy server is not checked, automatically detect settings is. I think I understand what you want to know about connecting via wireless or ethernet but, let me explain to give you a clearer answer. I have a linksys 4 port router, there are 2 connected computers to that router, there is a belkin wireless router connected to the 4th port. The belkin wireless also has 4 ethernet ports on it, there is 1 computer connected to that, and some others that access the wifi. None of the machines have problems, seeing the other computers in the network, and they don't have internet connection problems. Only on my laptop (when not within range of the wireless router) do I have connection issues when I connect directly to the linksys. I can see the other computers, and access their shared folders, and as I stated previously I can ping and resolve website addresses, But IE and FF will not connect or display any webpages. Niether of the routers has any websites blocked. Also I have switched around the cables just to make sure I didn't have a bad port but the problem still exists. I'm really puzzled by this because on the surface, there is no reason why I should have so much difficulty, but obviously I'm missing some ethernet setting.

vonWolfe, Let me make sure I understand first: You have a latop that CAN connect to the Internet wirelessly through the WLAN router but not when connected to the router with a cable. You have tried changing the cable and I assume ( correct me if Im wrong) you also tried plugging it into a differemt port on the WLAN router AND you have tried a different computer in the port where the laptop has a problem. Have you tried all that as well with no success? Let me know if I have represented your status correctly. If you have then have you tried disabling the wireless adaptor when you connect by cable? I know this is not a long term solution but it has worked for me in the past. Troy

Hi there, may I join the discussion? Cause I have a very similar problem: Wireless: no problem, LAN: I am online (skype is on) and can access https sites but when I try to connect to a 'normal' http site, I am prompted to enter a valid username and password and whatever I try (adminsitrator log in, work log in (it's a work network, but I never had that problem with my previous laptop) it doesn't work and says that the page cannot be displayed (Notification code: (1, PROXY_AUTH_REQUIRED).) I am not connected through a proxy server (first thing I checked, i.e. LAN settings are set to 'Automatically detect settings'). I already contacted the IT people from my work, but they say it is not their problem as it is a private computer. I just got this laptop a few days ago so I havn't tried a different LAN connection yet. Any help/suggestions/ ideas are greatly appreciated Thanks, Susanne

Troy, You've got it exactly. Yes I've disabled the wireless. And now for some good news & bad news... The good news is that I have it working now in both sides of the network, the bad news is that I have no idea why! Here's what happened today; This morning I was pouring over every advanced setting these two routers have, On the belkin (wifi) everything looked good for the configuration, DHCP was off, IP and gateway were correct etc. And then I noticed a toggle setting in the wlan section of the interface, namely "use as AP only". I checked that, saved the settings and restarted everything. That setting completly removes the options for NAT, firewall, DHCP, etc. So instead of showing all these items as DISABLED, they aren't available at all. Basically turning the router into a dumb switch. Ok so after that little adventure I thought, "ok I've either fixed it, or turned the router into a paper wieght" anyway since the wifi was working afterthat, off to the linksys I went, plugged into that and low and behold a little icon pops up chastising me for having used the install CD that came with the belkin router (just kidding). Anyway a program the Belkin monitor suddenly wanted me to start entering information and run setup "again". A quick trip to the control panel, and that monitor program was uninstalled in a couple of seconds. TADA Full internet connectivity on the wired ethernet & wifi. So not knowing much about belkin or their monitoring software, I can only assume that this program was talking to the router (in loving terms) about what, I'll never know. Possibly when switching from wifi to ethernet, this program looses contact with the router its supposed to be sweeping off its feet, and then turns into a stalker while totally messing with other connections until in can reestablish a connection to its beloved belkin router. Again, this is only a guess, and in any event the combination of removing this program and putting the belkin in AP only seems to have fixed this. "____ hath no fury like a router scorned" Thanks to all the 288 who've read all about my problems, and huge thank you to the 2 people who tried to help.
