windows.old file
Hi. I think I did somethign stupid. I recently purchased and downloaded windows 7 onto my dell xps 9000 with vista. I did a custom, or clean install. I wanted to bring all of the programs that I was using on to my new computer, such as roxio and some other dell applications, like power dvd. I went to the windows.old folder, and tried to transfer almost all of the things that were not already in the new windows folder. Now, I really don't know much about computers, so I just assumed that everything would be fine that way. But my question is, is there a problem with transferring things like .dll filesfrom vista to 7?Some of the programs that I thought i had transferred successfully did not work, like roxio. It keeps telling me that I need a certain .dll file to run it. I searched for that .dll in the windows.old, found it, and transferred it but it still doesn't work. Now I'm concerned because I feel like I have just pretty much messed up my entire computer, because there are some things that were in thewindows.old folder thatI transferred, and some things that I didn't, and I don't know if I transferred everything I need, or ifI shouldn't have transferred those things at all. If I do a clean install again, that would probablyrestore everything but it wouldn't solve the problem of the roxio and other dell applications not being transferred properly, which is what I wanted to have in the first place. Please help!!

Unfortunately, just transferring files doesn't work most of the time, especially for more complicated software like Roxio. You're best bet would have been to try an Upgrade install. That "MAY" have preserved many of your installed programs, though certainly not all of them. Since you did a clean install, you're only recourse is to install the programs you want. I just upgraded to Roxio 2010 since my previous Roxio 10 did not work correctly with Windows 7. Just to show you what is missing when you simply copy the files over, there are well over 2000 entries containing the word Roxio in the registry, and I killed the search at 18%.Rich

Clean install the system requires reinstalling all applications on the computer.

On the presumption that you know what you are doing, did you go to folder options and turn on 'Show hidden files, folders, or drives'? If not then you will not 'see' nor transfer across all the files (e.g. what is held in the 'AppData' folder under your old user name).

HiWhen you perform a Custom (Clean) install, all of your programs must be completely reinstalled. You cannot simply move the files onto the new install. During an install, all of the many registry keys, folders and other components must be recreated. The only thing you should be copying from the Windows.old folder are personal files, such as data files, pictures, music, or videos, etc.Hope this helps.Thank You for using Windows 7
