windows 7 cannot map nas shares and doesn't discover other computers and devices on the network
I have a Windows 7 ultimate (64 bit) machine which was working fine till I installed the VMWARE workstation 7 application. After the installation and reboot, the windows 7 machine cannot discover my other computers (windows Xp and linux) on the network (a workgroup) anymore and it also cannot map my NAS shares anymore. The Nas and other computers are reachable by their IP addresses but not via their names. When I start the windows 7 machine by "safeboot with network" everything seems to work fine. The windows 7 can see the other computers and the NAS. Mapping the Nas shares is also not a problem. I already tried by uninstalling the VMWare Workstation 7 and to use the system restore function to solve the problem, but it didn't solve the problem. Does anyone know what the problem is? and how can I discover what teh differences are between the normal boot and the safeboot with network? Ian

Hi, I could not find a similar problem in the other post. However I noticed a difference when I connected my router to the adsl modem instead to my cable modem (I have a cable and a adsl connection). After connecting the adsl modem to my router the windows 7 machine could find the nas shares and the other computers in the workgroup again.

This issue can be caused by your security programs, such as antivirus and firewall that may block DNS related network packs from network. I suggest you temporary disable the security programs and check the result. After you find the root cause, please check the configurations. You may specially allow the UDP and TCP port 53. If the issue persists after disabling the security programs, please disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps:1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.Arthur Xie - MSFT
