windows desktop search toolbar - issues with the UI
I really like the new indexing service from microsoft, but there's a few issues I have with the UI. The "search desktop" toolbar searches everything by default- file name and contents. Is there a way to default this to JUST file name and or other options? For the life of me and can't figure out how to do this. Also when I search for a file using the toolbar the full blown UI comes up, but the "search" options pane does not come up by default. I have to go to "view">"explorer bar">"Search" (or hit crtl-e which usually doesn't work) every time I want to specify different search criteria being that it does not retain this navigation pane after I close and reopen the program. How can I make it so the search option pane is always there? Thanks for any responses.

The short answer: Use the Windows Search 4 Advanced Query Syntax to search for filenames. Examples: You want to search for any file with the characters audit in the name (but not in contents), enter this query: filename:*audit*You want to search for any file with filename extension .xls, enter this query: ext:xls I don't think you can get the search option pane to work the way you want (but hey, I'm the first to admit I don't know everything); it seems clear that Microsoft wants us to use the advanced syntax for our searches, so we would be specifying all options in the search query string. Yes, I agree that it's kind of ludicrous to have to remember a whole arbitrary search syntax to be able to use the Windows Search facility effectively. Yet it *might* actually be worth learning EXCEPT that for content searches Windows Search doesn't always find strings that are really there, and things get even more complex (and iffy) if one leaves indexing enabled. Here's a reference for the Windows Search 4 Advanced Query Syntax, by the way: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/technicalresources/advquery.mspx Worth considering as an alternative to Windows Search for content searches, if you really like to be confident that the results you see are trustworthy, is this tool: grepWin by Stefan. It's free and available here: http://tools.tortoisesvn.net/grepWin Good luck. -Noel
