According to the Lenovo/IBM web site, the X40's shipped with an Intel Extreme Graphics II subsystem. Reference:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-58221.html#graphicsIt also mentions that it can only do 32 or 64 MB of video memory. It also shipped way back in the day with Win NT 4 SP6, 2000 SP4 or XP SP1. Something tells me that you're going to have a very difficult time getting the video to do much more than VGASave mode... You might want to consider retiring the old laptop and upgrading to a newer one that has a chipset that is more capable...

It is possible to install Windows 7 on an X40.The installation instructions here allowed me to install Windows 7 Professional Retail on a ThinkpadX40 with the Intel 855GM chipset and 82852G display adapter:http://www.groundstate.net/855GMWin7.htmlUninstall everything first to get rid of all the other drivers. Download the first driver listed on that page. Follow the directions precisely--and it will work.I have tried nearly all the other recipes I found, and none of them worked. Now, both display adapters appear as well as the right-click Intel options in the desktop context menu. Additionally, the Fn-F7 toggle now works as well.Perfect! Glad I persisted until I found the solution.

Soundbite,Is your solution still working? Which release of Win 7 are you using?I tried this a couple of times with the GA release of Win 7. This guys solution makes sense and I managed to get the driver to install, but it wouldn't stick. I'm looking for evidence that it might still work if I try again.Thanks,-Mike

Glad I persisted until I found the solution. I also tried installing windows 7 ultimate on a IBM thinkpad running windows xp proffessional. I could not install it staright away. i had to do a CUSTOM install. this will wipe everthing of your harddrive. The funny thing is i did not have to go and download anydrivers after installing and it worked fine. When you have installed it on your x40 machine it takes up about 10GB. it Supprisingly runs alot faster then my main pc. which has a 4gb ram and a 500gb harddrive

I have sense lost F7-toggling ability. I'm not sure what happened.

I can't run through the whole thing now, but I know that I had to follow the instructions absolutely explictly. They didn't work for me the first time. On the second shot, it worked. So maybe I was doing something slightly wrong on the first shot. Sorry I can't help you more than that! Post back and let us know your progress.

I also have an IBM X40. My local computer shop reformatted mz machine from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7. It seems to work ok but You Tube videos load slowly and Real Media Player seems to time out. Would I be better off going back to Windows XP or can I upgrade my video card? Thanks,

I too have lost my Fn-F7 toggling ability. Did you ever find a solution?
