Is Printer Management Available in Windows 7 Home Premium?
Hi - I am running a home network with a number of pc's all running Windows 7 Home premium (both 32 and 64 bit). I would like to use the Printer Management Console as described in the Windows 7 Home Premium Help Facility and numerous Microsoft web sites, but Printer management is not shown in my administrative tools folder. If I lookup Printer management in the Windows 7 help facility, the first choice is Print Management for IT Pros, which states that it should be available - " Management Console Print Management provides a single interface that administrators can use to administer multiple printers and print servers. You can also use Print Management to export printers and settings from one computer and import them on another computer. To open the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in for Print Management, click Start, click Control Panel, click System and Security, click Administrative Tools, and then click Print Management." If I lookup printer management on Microsoft websites there are many instances where they describe Printer Management as available under Windows 7, for example http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731058.aspx. None of the Windows marketing web sites mentions that Printer Management is only being available under certain editions. Note that I can find a couple of occurances of printmanagement.msc on my pc, but when I try to run them (as an administrator) I get the message "MMC could not create the snap-in." It seems as though someone at Microsoft made a decsion to remove the Print Management functionality from Home Premium and not tell their customers or staff. Very frustrating - if anyone knows the offical position of Microsoft I would like to hear it. Iif anyone knows of a way of enabling Print Management in Home Premium I would be delighted to hear about it. Dave

A shot in the dark: Do you need to install it as a feature? (Control panel -> Programs and Features -> Add/Remove features) You have all the drivers you need, I hope?

Thanks for the response Arve, but though there are four Windows print features that you can turn on in this manner, Printer Management Console is not one of them. Dave

According to Alan Morris's reply to your post here http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7hardware/thread/62aab3e3-897c-4656-8d1b-58c20bd940fd/#d852cda6-43a7-4712-b225-b8f023ed996e , it isn't available in Home Premium. I was sorry to read that, too. SC Tom -There's no such thing as TMI when asking for tech support.
